A mailing tube can help to protect posters, blueprints, or other large paper items that need to be shipped. However, if you don't pack your items carefully, they may be susceptible to damage. To protect items when using a shipping tube, keep the following tips in mind.

1. Make sure the roll has ample length.

If the shipping tube is too short for your roll of paper, the paper will get damaged. Make sure to stock a variety of lengths of shipping tubes if you mail these types of items regularly. If you regularly ship very long items, you may need to invest in custom-length mailing tubes.

Ideally, you want a bit of space on both ends of the tube. In a pinch, it's better to put a roll diagonally in a box than it is to use a tube that's too short.

2. Secure the roll.

Don't let the shipping tube hold the roll together. Instead, make sure that you secure the roll before packing it. You can do this with shrink wrap, rubber bands, or easily removable tape.

In all cases, be sure to gently secure the roll so that it doesn't get damaged. For instance, if the rubber bands are too tight, they can rip or dent the paper. Or certain types of tape can rip the paper.

If the roll isn't secure, it will unfurl in the shipping tube. Then, when the recipient tries to pull it out, it may get jammed along the sides of the tube. This can lead to damage during unboxing.

3. Add extra packaging.

If desired, you can add extra packaging to protect the paper. You can pour packing peanuts around the poster. Or you can wrap bubble wrap around the roll before placing it in the tube.

4. Tape the caps.

The caps on a shipping tube are designed to stay in place, but if you want extra security for your documents, you can tape the caps. For instance, if you're shipping the roll to a foreign country or anywhere that you're worried about rough handling during shipping, you should take this extra step.

5. Invest in a high-quality tube.

The items you ship are important. Whether you sell posters, ship important documents to clients, or are just sending a gift to a loved one, you want it to arrive in good condition. To ensure it does, you should invest in a high-quality mailing tube.
